So, a lot of us had a front row seat to this little thing we called the internet.

I find some irony in spank!. The code hasn't been updated in ages and their is a bit of nostalgia when i meander through the threads now a days. and so it makes me remember all the tiny little tweaks that lead us from the days that Al Gore invented the interwebs to the series of pneumatic tubes that brought us youtube.

Is anyone scared of SOPA? Does anyone think it's going to pass?

I want to know your thoughts

I would love it if Facebook, google, reddit, Wikipedia, Twitter, Yahoo, hotmail, Amazon, youtube and whatever other unlikely allies went with their plan to black out for a whole day with just a message saying, "Do you want the internet to look like this forever? No? Then call your Congressman/Senator/[whomever it is you Americans are supposed to call, I dunno]."

Wait, where's the irony?

SOPA is as much of a mess as the UK's digital rights bill.

I've been fairly active about it. Have signed petitions, sent letters, etc. Thinking about it actually clenches my bum in fear.

I don't see it passing after yesterday. I do think it's ridiculous that it took something like a multiple site blackout to draw attention to it though.

I read shelly's post thinking "Oh man, I wish I could like that"

but after reading your post Im reminded on why I enjoy the fact that there is no simple "like" button and that you have to express yourself with words here. i feel dumbed by facebook. Smile and both your posts made me laugh out loud. thank youu

It is an irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on them for information use their services. It is also an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today. It's a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests.

It's postponed. It's not over.

I think this week's FBI shutdown of megaupload gives us a stark warning. Anonymous' response could easily be spun to make SOPA look necessary once this bout of public conscience has passed.

The thing is, the FBI's shutdown of megaupload proves that SOPA isn't needed to fight piracy. If anything, it only makes SOPA more irrelevant, imho.

There needs to be SOMETHING out there but SOPA isn't it.
IMO "tube sites" should require ID to make an account where you can upload stuff. Nobody but the webmaster/whoever is in charge would be able to see them, not the public. But that way at least if a person uploads illegal content there is someone liable, and the site itself won't be shut down, just the person actually doing something wrong. If you're not comfortable uploading your ID, don't upload content, its not like anyone is forcing you to do it.

Is this because you have a vested interest though, being in a profession where uploading of content has taken the money out?

That is undoubtedly the reason. If nobody gave her money for her work, she wouldn't be able to afford living. But I don't think it makes any sense to be making tougher copyright laws. For one thing, artists do not create in a vacuum -- they are inspired by the environment around them and by what's been done before, which is really just the accumulation of the human culture they're aware of. I certainly do think that we should absolutely value our creative people and give them money so that they can live and thrive and continue to create more. I spend a good chunk of money on music, books, and movies even though I can get all of these things for free.
In any case, I'm hoping that in the next hundred years or so we'll be able to transition out of economies based on the shitty monetary system we've got now and into one based one sharing, trust, bartering, and self-sufficient resilient communities, where money is restored to its proper use as a medium of exchange, perhaps just for complicated projects over long distances. I bet that sounds terrifying or ridiculous to everybody now. Oh well. All in due time.
