Here is a description from wikipedia...

Occupy Wall Street is an ongoing series of demonstrations in New York City[5] based in Zuccotti Park, formerly "Liberty Plaza Park". The protest was originally[citation needed] called for by the Canadian activist[6] group Adbusters; it took inspiration from the Arab Spring movement (particularly the Tahrir Square protests in Cairo, which initiated the 2011 Egyptian Revolution), the Libyan Civil War, and from the Spanish Indignants.[7][8]

The participants of the event are mainly protesting against social and economic inequality, corporate greed, and the influence of corporate money and lobbyists on government, among other concerns.[9][10] Adbusters states that, "Beginning from one simple demand – a presidential commission to separate money from politics – we start setting the agenda for a new America."[11] The protest's organizers hope that the protesters themselves will formulate their own specific demands, expecting them to be focused on "taking to task the people who perpetrated the economic meltdown."[12][13][14]

By October 7, similar demonstrations had been held in Washington, D.C.,[15] Los Angeles,[16] San Francisco,[17] San Jose,[18] Boston, Chicago, Houston[19], Philadelphia, Miami,[20] Salt Lake City,[21] Portland, Maine,[22] Jersey City,[23][24] Trenton,[23] Portland, Oregon,[25] Seattle,[26] Denver,[26][27][28][29] Kansas City, MO,[30] Austin,[31] Ann Arbor,[32] Cleveland,[33] Dallas,[34] Minneapolis,[35] Sacramento[36] and Tampa.[37][38][39] and Atlanta.[40] October 15 protests are expected in at least twenty-five cities outside the U.S

It's not really stupid. It's one of the first signs that the general populace is really dissatisfied enough with the way our country is run to actually do something, even if that action is a little vague or disorganized.

The fact that it gets any positive press at all in the US, or that your average joe is aware of it, is a huge deal.

Maybe so. You do realize that your country (and by extension, the rest of the world) is getting majorly fucked over by a handful of rich, powerful people, right? It's amazing how well many of you have been doing despite this stranglehold.
There are of course many other problems in the world and everybody is to blame some for them, but working seriously on just about anything else while trying to ignore this particular issue is just pissing in the dark. I am very much for people getting paid fairly for how much they work/how hard the work is/etc., which means that there will certainly be income disparities, but not to the extent that there is now. No one can possibly work hard enough to make billions in a year! That means countless others are getting cheated out of money they could totally use.

Nah the whole thing isn't stupid. There's an occupation going on in Baltimore too right now (which is much much smaller) but the general concept is something I'm definitely all about. The basic idea is that "We are the 99%" and it's pretty much about the inequality between the top one percent of the wealthiest Americans and everyone else.

Now here's why it seems kind of dumb and directionless! The movement itself is a leaderless group and all of it's goals are based on the people coming together and democratically organizing what they'd like to see change. The whole occupation is merely an umbrella idea so that the occupiers can bring up the issues that are important to them and everyone can collectively find unity as the 99%. And thus the peaceful protest has a purpose but no real direction, no one is really rallying for specific change.

However directionless all of it seems (at least in this city) I do like to see this happening. If nothing else it'll inspire people who have no idea how money is being used in their own government to educate themselves.

We're so used to thinking in terms of direction as coming from outside, from above, from far away. What I love about this whole thing is that people are forming their own little self-governed villages and taking charge for themselves in much smaller groups about what to do with the state of the world. There are people working to make sure everyone's basic needs are met, that things are kept clean and drug-free, and there's entertainment along with daily talks and teach-ins about, among many things, how money and economics works. Of course, living in city parks with food donations coming in from outside is not sustainable, but then neither is the way of life most of us (in wealthy countries) are living. Something more balanced needs to emerge.

Also, it's rather irritating to hear cries of "What are their demands? Why won't they just hurry up and tell us? Grmph, hrrmph!" when our generation has been told all our lives that we're all about "me, me, me" and instant gratification. For a change a bunch of us are actually assembling together and having slow, thoughtful discussions lasting weeks, possibly months -- and hopefully it'll remain ongoing -- about how best to live. I can't think of anything more hopeful.

The problem is that it won't change anything, these protests are only serving to put more people in jail, which in the long run will just cost the "little people" more money. It's also being organized and executed by people that are above poverty level, those that are below it are too busy working to take weeks off to protest. I think it's an awesome idea, trying to take it back from "the man", but I also think that it is a losing battle across the board. More people need a better education to get into positions of power to fight this in a way that would actually hold ground.

This has been going on for decades and people haven't given a shit because the people that were doing it were actually needy. The homeless, vagabonds, transients have all been carrying, living, and embodying this spirit for ever and people (most of them the same people that are protesting now) never gave it a single thought. People that have enough to survive on just need something to bitch about because the mediocrity of every day life is boring, people that are actually in need are still ignored, and in general silent.

I LOVE that people are finally getting their asses off their blogs and you know, leaving the house to protest the old fashioned git-er-done way.

Even if you don't know exactly how to fix a problem showing that you're pissed is a good way to get attention.

i am positive that this is not stupid.
if anyone wants to become more educated , is a really great video shot on wall street interviewing a number of protesters

something that is really fascinating to me is this divide in opinion between whether this is "stupid", productive, whatnot. that what to one person is common sense that this is an empowering movement could have no effect on someone else is intriguing. a friend of mine said "it's weird" of occupy wall street. it's weird? well - interesting because yes she is right - it's weird in that we've never seen this alive and present in our own generation, in north america. as i watched that video i realized it's weird because it's scary, and it's scary because it's so serious AND so immediate, so alive - no one knows what the outcome of this protest with roots will be now but it certainly has potential for creating change , especially given the example of leaders that have recently been taken down in other countries. think about that. that's huge.

this is a good one too[/url]
