So I did the stupid thing you shouldn't do, and turned off my computer while it was doing an update package. But only because it seemed to be going way too slow.

BUT now it's stuck on the black screen with the white underscore in the top left corner that appears when you first turn it on. I tried turning it off, and on again, but everytime it's starts turning on and stays on that screen. I don't know what to do! Anyone have this happen?

Have you tried panicking? That's what I usually do.

Also, try talking it into doing what you want. Be really whiny and insistent and call it names.

I did that first. I even did this weird thing I used to do as a kid when I thought I'd really messed up and hit my head a few times.

Oddly, it has not produced any results.

I didn't call it names. I did, however, ask it why it was doing this to me.

I was refering to Jon in my previous post btw

hhmmm that's a tough one. You might need to ask Microsoft [if it was a windows update]. I have no clue what could actually help besides reformatting and that is way too drastic.
It would be like saying "this mosquito bite is driving me crazy cause it is on my foot inside my shoe. I know! I will cut my foot off!"
Which I have considered as a valid option to killer mosquito bites from time to time.

Techie bf says, "Press F8 and if there's a menu try safe mode (with network support if you can get). If that works then try the update again."

It won't let me! I tried pressing F8, and nothing happens differently. I also tried F2 and F12 which are the 2 options kisted when you first turn on the computer.

Fuck, I don't understand how I could have fucked this up so bad.

I mis-parsed that... "nothing happens differently". Instead of all together, it was more like "nothing happens, [but] differently".
Er. D'you have backups of your stuff?

er, sort of. Just the really important stuff. But not really, because as I explained before with the shutting down during an update thing, I am an idiot,

Do you have a restore/repair disc thing?

If you do end up having to format and reinstall completely, you may be able to save data by using a bootable disc (I generally use Ubuntu, but that's because I'm most used to it) to access it without using the installed OS, then copying the data to another hard drive or flash drive...

I am so computer illiterate that I am not totally sure what you are saying. Part of me is still hoping i will just be able to turn it on when I get home today.

If that doesn't work out for me, I will continue on to my discs.

I thought you had to hold F8, actually, during boot up.

Also, here's how I fix laptops (works on my Mac, did something similar on my ancient PC): unplug the power cord, and then hold down the power button for an unreasonable amount of time until something happens.

If that does not work, try different power cord/battery in/out combinations.

So, turn on the computer and immediately hold down F8 until something happens? I found my toshiba reboot cd's. I just don't know how to apply them. I need to date a computer nerd STAT

Got a nerdy, virgin 27 year old friend winging his way to you now!

If you have important data the hard drive should be readable if not bootable. If you know anyone with some computer nouse have them put the hard disk physically in their machine or a case (makes it like a USB drive i.e. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817392032 but differs depending on hard drive type so that one might not be the right one) and back up from there.

Otherwise reinstall. You should have a boot menu (one of the F[number] options on boot. You want to be able to boot from CD and you should be able to follow the instructions.

My problem is that when I put the boot CD in, and restarted, and pressed one of the F# keys, nothing happened. Well, nothing different. It just went onto the black screen and stayed there.

Are you sure its a boot disc you are loading? I take it you didn't get a windows disc with the machine.
