or.... did I just give some sketchy girl $20 and my shitty flip phone battery for no reason?

I was walking downtown at night (something I've done for YEARS without any repercussions) and this girl I kinda knew was following me puts what was clearly her finger to my back and said "give me your money or I'll fuck you up."

So she didn't have a weapon but I'm thinking, someone like her, who I can only assume is some sort of sex trade worker (judging by outfit and circumstance) with a pretty rough life, probably really can fuck me up and it's not worth testing that theory.

So I gave her the $20 I had on me, and she took my super old flip phone and my also super old, on-its-last-legs ipod shuffle. Then I asked for my phone back cause it's worth nothing, and she took the battery and gave me back the phone.

Then she asked if she could have my ring...... and I said "no."

Then she kind of giggled and said "I'm really sorry for doing this, I never do this, it's just I owe some bikers some money and I don't want to get killed you know? I'm really sorry, please don't report me!"

Then she also said "You're so lucky I'm not punching you right now."

Then I was like, yeah ok can I go? and we parted ways.

So yeah. When she said 'Give me your money," could I have just said... no thanks?

Either way, gonna take this as a gentle warning from the universe I shouldn't be walking alone downtown anymore. I've pushed my luck for far too long I guess. Hope she enjoys my ipod music before the battery dies...

That's a really sad, bizarre, and kind of scary story. Are you okay? Also, yeah, probably a good idea to err on the side of caution.

1) Report her right away
2) Keep walking downtown any time of night. You have every right to. Don't let them win. For your safety though you may want to get some self-defence classes, and figure out the key fist thing.
3) If you'd like to, perhaps donate/volunteer with a shelter/youth-at-risk/poverty-helping type organization. That's really one of the best ways to help reduce crime overall.

She was not going to hurt you. The giggle and weird apology makes that clear. However, I understand and I would probably have been scared shitless as well.
... also, how do you know her?

Although in this case I think you don't need to change your habits at all, I think that the notion of "don't let them win" is pretty bad advice. I obviously don't think you should mold your life entirely around people's bad actions, but if you did indeed live in a place where violence occured at night, I don't think it's "letting them win" to avoid walking alone at night. It's keeping yourself safe. Not that it would be your fault if you should be attacked at night.

But like Shelly said, I think you made the right choice. Better to lose some cash and an ipod than guess wrong and be face down on the sidewalk.

Also, how DO you know her?

no i don't know her, what I wrote was unclear. I knew she was following me.

And... I wasn't really that scared, I've never been that scared to walk alone, hence me doing it all the time. People constantly tell me not to but I think it's ridiculous, as was said, to live in fear based on things that COULD happen, and to limit my independence based on fear, especially as a woman walking at night (though my incident was clearly not a gender issue thing).

HOWEVER I don't really want to get robbed again, cause now I went out and got a new ipod and iphone... so I really can't afford to get robbed by an experienced mugger I can't haggle with. So it's more a financial thing as weird as that is.

I really think your attitude has a big role to play on your victimization. I don't believe I'm going to get attacked, robbed, raped... and other than last night, I've been fine for 6 years. Law of attraction or something.

Then again, not saying it's your fault if you're paranoid and then it happens, but people also look for easy targets, etc.

Not really sure what my point is. It was a really weird experience and I just feel bad for the girl really. She said she was taking my ipod cause she had never had anything like that before Sad!. She needs it more than me...

I don't know. I've always been a really cautious person, but it didn't stop a gun from being pulled on me in broad daylight. I wouldn't necessarily walk by myself at night, because while yeah, in an ideal world, you should be fine, sadly sometimes that's not the case. And by always being with someone or taking adequate precautions I can *definitely* not be the girl who disappeared walking home from the bar one night.

report her and hopefully she gets jail time, one less criminal on the street atleast for a time period. Walking home at night by yourself is unsafe for anyone, not just for girls so do what you have to to avoid similiar situations.

Here's the thing about 'don't let them win.' While I agree in theory in the sense of not limiting yourself due to fear, I don't think there's really a 'them' that's winning. I don't really think the sex worker who owes someone money so had to jack me for a phone battery worth $5 is really winning, here.

But clearly that's not what Ivan meant. I just don't even really feel angry at the girl. And I really don't see the point in reporting it to police.

Yeah, but if you were her first (and it seems so?) and it goes off without a hitch she'll be more inclined to do it in the future. And who knows, she may get bolder/more violent. YOU were okay. That doesn't mean that anybody else she decides to rob will be.

I'm with Shelly. Though, in ths case, depending on the workload for your police department, they probably aren't going to do much.unless they think they have the same girl for something different/ more serious.

oh yes, i read the first line. i read the entire post:

and if you're not careful, i'm about to read YOU. now, calmate'.
what did you not understand about my answer?

i wouldn't even let people know that i handled a situation that way, had i been tragic enough to have done so. THATS what had me totally astonished.

there's not anything for you to tell the police at this point. they probably would not file a report.

its just pretty much like you agreed to give this girl your stuff, so that you could get newer stuff... ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

I think it's funny, that's why I tell people. I have the ability to laugh at myself.
and ya, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. It was just a weird situation overall I felt like sharing.

It's just a little annoying you felt the need to come on here and very condescendingly tell me stuff I already implied, and also said outright.

But if it makes you feel good, who am I to stop you.
