I actually would like to continue having periods, to monitor the chances that I may be preggers anyway. It's one of those things I would need to be absolutely sure about. Mama likes to drink, but disaproves of drinking while pregnant.

I'm not too bothered about that - almost always use condoms anyway. By "almost", I mean that my bed-partner of the last almost 5 years and I have got carried away maybe three times (and I've always been on the implant, and two of those times were before I realised that latex and I really don't get along) >.>
The combination of the effectiveness of the implant and that of condoms is enough for me, and then I'm also aware that periods don't necessarily mean anything. It's rare for them not to, as far as I know, but still... not really enough to reassure me.

Carrie, are your periods particularly bad? Do you use a menstrual cup? It would help with convenience and heavy flow (everybody should use them though, they're frakking awesome. I got the DivaCup because of a Spank thread)

I love the fact that we have an actual doctor on here so now when somebody asks for medical advice in a thread we can't just point-blank say, "We're not doctors..." Razz

Loss of bone density does not sound fun. As for weight gain... I'm beginning to think that minor fluctuations within around 10 lbs can't really be that bad, depending on seasons and such. I tend to weigh more in the winter than in the summer and I think that's normal for most people, as we eat somewhat heavier foods in the winter for warmth. Although I ride my bicycle year-round I do it a bit less in cold, rainy weather, but once it gets warmer (frankly still waiting for spring to start around here...) I'll get outside more and the slight extra weight will get shucked off.

Also, been using nothing but condoms for 3+ years with nothing but success and will probably do so for the rest of my life, unless I ever feel like figuring out that fertility awareness method which can be 99% effective and for which I'd be a great candidate because my cycle is like clockwork.

in england, women are generally not given the option of seeinh an nhs gynecologist until they're 25 (i think it's different in scotland). i do have access to a family planning clinic that i'm intending on visiting when i'm back in london in 3 weeks.

Unless you ask to be referred to one in which case you'll get to see one.

And yes the Mirena is a really good idea.

?! 10lbs is a maaaajor weight change. i went back on the pill in august after a break of a year (had been on it for about 5 years before that, various different pills) and literally, within a week i noticed the difference. not a single one of my bras fitted properly, i felt constantly completely uncomfortable in my own skin. it was shit. it also made me burst into tears all the time, though at the time i was in a ridiculously stressful/emotional situation - but being on the pill made it about five hundred times worse. i've been on other pills and not had that though - i think its literally just trial and error.

now i just use condoms, also because i think not being on the pill makes me much less likely to think fuck it and not use one when sleeping with someone, which is dummmb.

that said, i had sex without a condom (twice, oops) two weeks ago and i remembered how much, much, much better it is.

Carrie - I've been referred to a gynaecologist twice, once when I was 17 and once when I was 23. Once in Scotland, once in Northern Ireland - so not exclusively Scotland. A lot of GP surgeries have a person who specialises in contraception - maybe worth checking if there is one at your GP if you can't get to see a gynaecologist.

Also, this thread really makes me glad I'm not sexually active, and don't plan to be until marriage when hopefully babies wouldn't be too big a shock. Not meant in a condemnatory way it just.. always sounds really stressful!

thanks, guys. i really appreciate all your advice and it's really helpful hearing your experiences. i've decided that i'm going to skip my next injection (which isn't until july argh) and hope that the nasty side effects go away in that break. i'm changing doctors when i move house in september so will discuss with them what i should do next. i would love to go back to condoms but it's not just me i've got to think about! but i'm thinking that will definitely be an option.
i've always had pretty normal periods, excluding the odd bit of fainting here and there. i have really low blood pressure though so i tend to faint at any time of the month if i'm not careful.
i usually put on 3lbs over christmas but tend to lose that quickly in january as i'm a pretty active person with a fast metabolism. i've read online how some women have been diagnosed with dormant metabolisms after being on depo eek.

yeah - when i came off the pill the weight just fell off, within about a week. i like not being on hormones now because its literally taken since i first quit it (may 2009, i think) till about this year to get my periods back on a regular schedule. now they are basically clockwork and i actually think its really cool to think my body has such a great internal timekeeping device without me doing anything. i didn't have a period for about 7 months when i first came off it, and then i'd have one about every 2-3 months. everytime i got one i'd almost throw a party because i'd be all HEY! i AM a woman after all....

I'm on (well, was, went off them for two months, going back on again) birth control pills, and the cheapest ones you can get at that. They work fine for me, but I also use condoms. I'm a bit suspicious that they make me much more hormonal, but I think that's due in part to the fact that my body is naturally on the testosterone side of things.

Anjali, I've heard only bad things about the Nuvaring.

I think the implant sounds quite nice. I'd kind of like to look into it because honestly, taking a pill the same time every day becomes quite frustrating for me.

I like the implant because I don't have to worry about it. I'm an incredibly absent minded person. I have a hard time remembering to take pills of any description, really. Also, the implant makes you not bleed as much, usually. That's nice. It also doesn't interact with as many medications, ie, antibiotics. And for me it was also cost effective. My insurance never did pay for pills, but the "surgery" to put the implant in cost me $20 and it'll last for three years.

Yeah I'm absent minded too, which is why I forget to take my pill. I also have a pretty irregular schedule during the week, so it's hard to find a time that I will consistently be available and remember to take it every day at the same time. I never quite known what the window of time is that you can take it within and still be fine.

they actually only tell you to take it same time every day so that you remember. you can quite safely skip a day and be completely protected, but i think if you know that you're less likely to be stringent about it.

Nuvaring failed me twice. I haven't gained any weight using Implanon and I've had it for a year.

Cindi, any other sideeffect with NuvaRing? I'd be doubling up, and just want to avoid uber hormone sideeffects.

Hmm. I don't remember being terribly moody. TMI maybe but every time I "went to the bathroom #2 style" I was always afraid it was gonna fall out so I'd have to check that it was still there. That was a little annoying but it stayed put usually and I'd just move it higher again. I didn't gain weight on it though. I don't know why it didn't work well for me, I guess my body was just not responsive to those hormones.

Implanon only made me feel like a heinous irritated bitch for a month then back to normal regular bitch mode. I really like it, aside from the period erratic-ness, especially because it lasts three years and has never failed anyone.

So one of my closest friends is a pharmacist and I've really learned from her that while doctor's have some info about medications, sometimes it's only superficial. If you have questions about a medication and any possible side effects, it's best to talk to a pharmacist.
