i've been on depo provera (the injection) for 6 months. it's pretty lovely not to have any periods but i've put on about 7lbs, which, after a conversation with a family planning nurse last night, i have realised was due to depo. when i first went on it my doctor swore blind that it would not make me put on weight and that this was just some crazy myth. he also didn't mention it decreases bone density; he's a pretty brilliant doctor. i know my body really well and have an unnatural talent for dieting, yet nothing i do seems to be budging this weight (and a quick search through the internet tells me that some women can't lose up to 80lbs that they have put on apparently due to this injection).

i really don't feel like i can trust my doctor anymore and i just don't really know what to do next. does anyone know whether there is some kind of miraculous birth control out there that stops periods and will not affect my weight? in fact i'm not even bothered about the former. has anyone had a similar experience with depo provera?

Seriously Carrie, 8lbs? You should change the title of this thread to "Let's talk about...my insecurities about my body".

I know people who have had this form of birth control and suffered no crippling weight gain. I doubt you'll put on 80lbs and not be able to shift it. You're pretty slim from all the photos I have seen anyway so I am sure you still look gorgeous.

Putting on a little weight is a small price to pay for reproductive freedom and liberation from the monthly toil of having a bloody period!

7lbs is quite a big weight gain for me. i have a small frame, low body fat and a 13 year history of eating disorders so yeah, it is unfortunately a big deal for me, particularly when i made it clear to my doctor that a weight gain is likely to effect me more than most women.

well maybe instead of frantically trying to shift the weight you could go to your doctor (request a different one if you no longer trust yours) and try to address some of the issues that make weight gain such an epic problem.

Actually, 8 lbs is, health wise important. I'm not saying it's a huge epic deal, but I find Western culture now a days seems to never really address the health issue of weight. Only what we perceive attractive.

Putting on weight, when you are at a healthy weight is, in fact, not good. If alternatives are available that will not have this effect, and also don't have other more serious side effects (depression, internal bleeding, you know what I mean) then they should be provided. Also, any potential complications should be made clear by a doctor before you take ANY medication.

Carrie, as for the birth control thing, I like your friends do not take any. However, from my friends who do take the pill, the general consensus is that sometimes it takes a couple tries to find one that works for you, and doesn't give you problematic menstrual cycles, and whatnot. However, the weight gain that is associated can easily be counteracted by increasing your standard workout by about 15 minutes each. Which at first can blow, but eventually you'll get used to it.

However, having seen recent pictures of you, you don't look to have put on any weight at all.

i know i'm not big, it would just be nice not to have to buy a new wardrobe if you know what i mean. i gain weight on my lower half and my skirts, etc are all getting very tight. it's moreso the bone density thing that really scares me as my calcium intake is nil. i really wish i had been told all these things before i went on it.

Yeah, I thought I had addressed that too.

That is a HUGE DEAL! You should be taking in calcium either way, though it need not come from milk products, necessarily. But go see another doctor, stat! Also, weight baring excerises are the best to maintian bone density.

This is not meant in any kind of offensive way, more of just a tip but googling most brand medicines will take you to their web sites where they are required to tell you side effects. I know everyone should trust their doctor and expect them to tell you all applicable information but as an adult, you should really look into what medications you're taking a little more. It's true that not all side effects will be an issue for every person but at least you'll know it's a possibility.
Calcium loss is the very first thing mentioned on the depo website as Important Safety Information. Weight gain is also mentioned.
But honestly, every kind of hormone birth control I know of has the potential for weight gain, I don't know if you'll have much luck finding one that doesn't.

as soon as i heard last night, i ordered some calcium supplements. from my research today i have read all kinds of horror stories of women developing osteoporosis in their 20s. depo provera seems like a strange first choice for birth control as it was presented to me, but it does seems to be wonderful for those who are using it for other reasons (bad PMS etc).

yeah, i totally agree, i should have. i guess i just expected my doctor to give me the full picture, or at least the essentials. i'm quite tempted to come off birth control completely.

Yeah, googling would be good. However, I think any doctor should highlight the most serious and prevalent side effects.

I also know that I am currently on a cortisol that if you google it, you get a lot of links suggesting it leads to skin cancer, whereas my doctor gace me an official publication from the society of dermatologists stating that no such link has been shown, blather blather, evidence, evidence.

However, had I found that same information my doc gave me, on the medication's company website, I would not have believed it.
I realise this is an opposite case, I just meant to illustrate that it should be a joint effort of personal research AND doctors who inform you of everything.

Also, Carries, to you have a gyno? Because this is something about which they would have more information than a GP. Their business, after all, is your lady business.

TADA! Yes there is!
Hi Cazma, I'm a doctor (I joined this site before I became one, hehe!). The only option which I think will suit you is Mirena, an intrauterine device or IUD. It's a thingy placed inside your uterus. It may initially cause irregular periods, but eventually results in very light or no periods at all. Since you are not directly taking hormones (orally), it won't affect your body. It mainly has local action.

It's widely popular as treatment for menorrhagia (heavy periods). I suffer from it myself and honestly, I can't wait to give birth to a couple of kids and use Mirena. lol...! Very Happy

Hmm.. what else, yeah, practically no systemic (bodily side effects), just local action. And the contraceptive effect lasts for upto 5 years. Once your doc inserts it inside your uterus (routine procedure, no down time) you can forget about contraception worries for minimum 5 years.

You can search online, but I being a doc and mother being a OBGYN, we both just love this method.
And depo is the worst kind. Where I did my graduation, the ladies would just use depo. It can even lead to infertility for prolonged period and irregular periods and in your case, weight gain.

Hope I helped! (Yeeeh! I get so excited when I get to give medical advice).

P.S.- These are my personal views, you must consult a your doctor in person before taking any action. I'm just helping as a fellow Spank!er. Please don't drag me to court... ;) lol...!

in england, women are generally not given the option of seeinh an nhs gynecologist until they're 25 (i think it's different in scotland). i do have access to a family planning clinic that i'm intending on visiting when i'm back in london in 3 weeks.

Implanon is pretty groovy, and the average overall weight gain is something like 3 lbs total for most women(from what I was told by *my* doctor) and it can stop your period.

That said, my results weren't typical and I have gained .. more than that. It's still worth it though. It goes in your arm in an incredibly simple procedure and then you don't think about it for three years.

I'm also on Implanon... I like it. Also has the bone density potential issue, but it does mean that I have no periods - well, maybe up to one light one a year.
On the other hand, that's completely unpredictable, now.
As for weight stuff, I started using it when I was 16 and I can't remember if it initially caused minor weight gain or not, but I've lost about a stone since then. Without trying, I mean. Maybe more than that; I haven't really been paying attention.

IUDs kinda terrify me. I'd rather mess myself up chemically than physically, if something goes wrong.
