Limp Bizkit does suck in general, but I do have a soft spot for their cover of "Faith." It's all scream-y, which I don't usually like, but do for that one.

I did like that cover of Faith as well, mainly because I love screamy stuff.

Are you overly familiar with the metal genre? Metal has become a very diverse form of music. I just want to know if you are basing this opinion on the metal that you hear on the radio and on TRL, because, yes, all that sounds the same, but most of it is just rock.

diverse? eh the tempo changes from this metal to that, and some of the vocals (i.e. screaming vs. singing) but that's all i've noticed.

Well, there is your problem. Most of that shit isn't metal. It's hard rock. It's watered down to the point where you can't really tell it from stuff like Matchbox Twenty. Being an avid metal fan, I've gotten my hands on as much of it as I can, and the diversity between some bands amazes me. You listen to something like Prong and then go to Atari Teenage Riot, Murderdolls, Nine Inch Nails. There are so many different styles.

Nine Inch Nails have definatly had their metal moments. Listen to the Broken ep.

The only good Rap/Metal I've ever heard was Killer Bees and Rage Against The Machine. Most of the bands that are out now are jumping on the wagon. It sells and they want a piece of it. It's just pop music (pop as in bubblegum pop) with distorted guitars and pseudo introspective lyrics.

I have no idea what you mean by funk metal, so I'm not gonna touch that.

Mudvayne, I find, is more of an attempt to be sound like Slayer, but using the Marilyn Manson shock tactics. I don't think very highly of them either.

The difference is talent, basically. People who are writing songs that mean something. People who know how to play their instruments and are willing to be audacious. People who are creating music for the sake of creating music. There is the difference. Limp Bizkit writes pop songs. They are designed to make money. Find the hidden meaning in a song like Rollin' for me. Because all I heard was a catchy pop tune.

funk metal- like RHCP or Rage against the machine or Incubus. its metal but with funkier basslines. see what i'm sayin.

i don't think lyrics matter a whole lot to a song (although its nice to see a musician who can actually think). that's why we call it music, and not lyrics.
but your point is well taken.

Well, the lyrics are part of the music, that's why you are (supposed to) sing them. Look at poetry. It's words that become almost musical when spoken. There is rythym and flow. That's what makes good poetry. If you are going to incorporate lyrics into music, then they should actually say somethinig. We don't need to hear about how horny you are. We don't care.

When did Incubus become Metal? Anyways, no I get what you're saying now. I love funk metal. This is why I say that metal is diverse. There is room for experimentation.

Edit: I just love the word fuck.

Yeah, because it's catchy. See, pop tune. My problem is, I don't like to listen to that on a continual basis. It's okay to hear something like Linkin Park once in a while. It doesn't bother me. But most of the time, I need something with more substance.

i'm a hiphop head, so i have a different view on lyrics and songwriting. in hiphop, like poetry, the crafting of a song is an art itself. nevermind the meaning. it's hard to write song that is flawlessly on beat (eminem can do it, jay-z can do it) to be able to do that takes a lot of talent. (and a nice mastery of the english language). so i give rappers respect for song writing abilities before substance usually.

I don't give respect to all hip hop artists. The ones that decide to throw in things like shinizzle and so forth to make a rhyme don't deserve respect.

I did state the rythmical flow of lyrics is important. It's incredibly important, but there has to be substance. You can't just throw a bunch of words together.
