NSI NATIONAL EXPOSURE AMATEUR MOVIE CONTEST 2005
Does your movie deserve to hit the big screen?
The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI) is calling on amateur filmmakers to enter a five-minute movie in the National Exposure Amateur Movie Contest, 2005. You can win cash and prizes and a big screen film premiere during the NSI FilmExchange Canadian Film Festival on March 5, 2005.

Originally only open to Manitobans, this is the second year the contest has run nationally*. In addition to an award for Best Film from Manitoba, this year the contest pays homage to amateur filmmakers across the country by introducing awards for Best Film from Western Canada and Best Film from Eastern Canada+.
“If you've ever thought about making a short film, the National Exposure Amateur Movie Contest is a great incentive. You don't have to be a technical expert by any means. You just need a camera, an idea and enthusiasm,” says Liz Hover, National Exposure Coordinator. “Maybe you've already made a five-minute film and dream of having it shown in a movie theatre. Here's your chance. Send it to us – you never know where it could lead.”
A panel of specialists from the television and film industry will choose 12 finalists. Awards of $100 will be presented in seven categories: Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Film Under 18, Best Film from Manitoba, Best Film from Western Canada and Best Film from Eastern Canada. During the NSI FilmExchange Canadian Film Festival audience members will vote for their favourite film, known as the People's Choice Award. First place wins $1,000 and second place $500.
In March 2004, a team from Winnipeg scooped the first place People's Choice Award for Best Film for their entry Jannie Bananie Goes on a Martini Bender. The film's director, James Swirsky, says, “NSI National Exposure has proven to be a real motivator for us as a filmmaking team. As a finalist in the contest, it was very encouraging to see others enjoying our film on the big screen. Winning an award seemed to propel us towards working on our next project – and the prize money helped us to make it a reality.”
Toronto-based, director/writer/actor, David Eng won the second place People's Choice Award for Best Film and Best Actor for his entry Rising Star! “National Exposure has been an important starting point for me as a filmmaker,” says David Eng. “Winning two awards was positive reinforcement of my work – a stamp of approval if you like. It has given me greater credibility in the eyes of the film industry in general.”
The National Screen Institute – Canada (NSI), with headquarters in Winnipeg, is one of Canada's four nationally recognized film and television training schools. With over 80% of NSI graduates working in the industry, our participants don't just learn about the process – they live it.
